Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.
In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
The preview reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer avoids is what Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and assisting giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Connections from the Previous Film
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia pinned to her outfit.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
