The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
