"When are you interviewing the band?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several high-profile fans have also petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

However Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
