A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other traders also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.
